KaKa Folder Protector 6.01

KaKa Folder Protector Editor's Review

Sugar and spice. Sweet and sour. Crunchy and smooth. Sometimes it's the contrast that makes something work, and that's the case with KaKa Folder Protector.

The contrast here is between simplicity and complexity: the simplicity for you and the complexity for anyone trying to break into your files.

This is one of those pieces of software that only really does one thing, but it does it well and with very little fuss. All you have to do is click on the KaKa icon in the folder you want to protect, add a password, and you're done. It works not only on your main hard drive, but also on flash disks (such as USB memory sticks) and external hard drives.

The complexity comes through the 256 bit encryption. To put that into context, it's a bit like having a combination lock that doesn't have the usual three or four dials, but rather 256. Oh, and it's not just 0-9 on each dial: you've got all the letters of the alphabet and some common symbols as well. Imagine trying to crack that!

The software certainly isn't perfect. For example, it might have been a bit smoother if it was set up so you could just right-click on a folder rather than have to open it up. Another limitation is that the software does then add a padlock symbol in Windows Explorer, which does give away that you've protected a folder and "got something to hide", though that's not going to be an issue for everyone.

Verdict: Pro-style protection that anyone can use.
